Townley Sherwood Gillespie was born on 18 December 1888 at 30 Hillman Street, Belfast, the first of five children of clerk William Henry Gillespie and his wife Sarah (nee Sherwood). By 1911 he was living with his family at 175 Albertbridge Road, Belfast, and working as a shop assistant.

Gillespie enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Antrim on 28 or 29 May 1915 (No.1636).

He died in the Military Hospital, Belfast, on 13 November 1915 and was buried in the Belfast City Cemetery, Northern Ireland, grave H2.15. The gravestone inscription reads:

1636 PRIVATE
TOWNLEY S. GILLESPIE
NORTH IRISH HORSE
13TH NOVEMBER 1915 AGE 27

THOU KNOWEST NOT NOW
BUT THOU SHALT KNOW
HEREAFTER
